Candace's Story and Where Our Inspiration Comes From
Maryland - October 19, 2014
The day we picked up Candace from the foster couple that transported her was the day that changed our lives.
This is the first ever picture we took with her. Notice her tucked tail, curved posture, and her head is lowered while my wife Andrea and I smile.
The truth was I had no idea what I was in for. I had an image in my head of how owning a dog was going to be, but the reality turned out to be very different. The experience made me look deep inside myself and changed me for the better.
Since this was an online rescue site, we never got the chance to meet her beforehand. And I'm glad we didn't because the cold truth is, if we had met her, we probably would have gone with a different dog.
She was afraid of everything, including me and I had no idea how to deal with it. My heart was broken, I was frustrated, I wanted to give up at one point, but my wife wouldn’t let me. I’m so glad she didn’t. With some help from a professional behaviorist, and seeing how using natural methods of dog psychology helped her (and me), I slowly fell in love with her as she did us.
Almost 7 years later, the improvements that I still see in her today has inspired me to study dog psychology and behavior and become a dog trainer. She’s inspired me to help other fearful dogs gain the confidence they need to become great family companions.
